Recently, I embarked on an unforgettable journey, combining two of my favorite activities, Tenkara fly fishing and Backpacking along the picturesque Loyalsock Creek in Pennsylvania. The early June weather was ideal for outdoor adventures, with mild temperatures and a brief rain shower on Sunday morning. Here’s a recap of my excellent weekend with a touch of history about the area.

Tenkara Fly Fishing Adventure
I took my tenkara rod and headed to the lively waters of Loyalsock Creek. Using the traditional Japanese tenkara method, I caught over a dozen trout, including brook and rainbow trout. The clear waters and abundance of fish made every cast an exciting experience.
Ideal Weather
The early June weather was excellent, with warm sun, a gentle breeze, and a refreshing rain shower on Sunday morning. It made the lush green scenery even more beautiful.
Exploring the Loyalsock Link Trail
In addition to fishing, I backpacked a section of the Loyalsock Link Trail. The trail led me through dense forests to stunning vistas showcasing the rugged terrain of north-central Pennsylvania.
A Glimpse of History
Loyalsock Creek has a rich history dating back to the Native American era. The name “Loyalsock” comes from the Native American word “Lawi-Saquick,” meaning “middle creek.” The area was also significant during the 19th-century lumber boom, with old railroads playing pivotal roles in transporting timber and coal. Long sections of the Loyalsock Trail utilize the old railroad track bed from the 19th century.
Highlights
One of the highlights of my hike was reaching the Loyalsock Canyon Vista, a breathtaking overlook providing a panoramic view of the canyon. The early summer foliage made it even more stunning. Another unforgettable moment was navigating through the “Haystacks,” unique sandstone formations in the creek that create small pools and cascades. It’s a perfect spot for a mid-hike rest and some extra fishing.
Final Thoughts
My weekend on Loyalsock Creek was a blend of welcomed solitude and adventure. The successful fishing, scenic hiking, and historical context of the area made it a trip to remember. Whether you’re an avid angler, a seasoned backpacker, or a history buff, Loyalsock Creek and its surrounding trails offer something special for everyone. I can’t wait for my next adventure in this beautiful part of Pennsylvania.
If you plan a visit, remember to check the current stream conditions and fishing regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Happy fishing and happy trails!
